You looked up at the sky, your breath curling around your upturned nose and towards the thick, fluffy
clouds. You had been outside only for about a minute and already, your nose started to ache from the biting air. You heard the crunch of snow behind you as you fiddled with the gloves you so snugly had on. You lowered your chin to the warm recesses of the collar of your coat and turned to meet the gaze of a smirking, pale young man. "What?" You asked, annoyed. You weren't one for the cold but for your best friend, you could manage.
"N-nothing." Matthew quickly snapped his gaze towards the sky. "You looked like you were in deep thought, since it happens so rarely, I didn't want to ruin this miracle."
You narrowed your eyes at him. "Hysterical, I was just basking in the glory of not hearing your voice for what little time you weren't talking. It's easy to tell that you and Alfie are related..."
"Oh, ouch! I think you actually BURNED
me a little there..." Mattie stretched out a hand and smacked your ear playfully.
You cradled your ear in your palm. "Okay, not that I wouldn't love
to stand here and spit fire at each other. I'm COLD! Where is this thing you wanted me to try?"
Mattie's face lit up. "Oh, yeah! Right this way (Name)!" He led you behind his small wooden shed
to reveal a.....
"What is it?" You leered at the funny-looking shiny thing.
"What do you mean "What is it?"
(Name)! It's a snowmobile!" Matthew sat down and plucked two helmets that were resting on the leather seat.
"And?" You took a sleek black helmet from his outstretched hand and stared at it as if it would bite your head off given the chance.
"And... let's go!" Matthew turned on and revved the engine a couple of times for effect.
You want me to drive
that thing? I don't even know how!" You threw your arms out to the side for dramatic punctuation on the last word.
"No, no, no, no, no. Not drive. Ride.
Do you really expect me to just hand you the keys to my brand-new snowmobile and say 'Here ya go, (Name). Good luck!' My new baby costs more than your shoes."
"Hey! These are Michael Kors!" You screeched, again
, wondering why the heck you were out here.
put on the helmet and get on!" Mattie smiled. You huffed and put the helmet on your head, struggling a bit with the unfamiliar clasp. Matthew laughed and kicked his leg around so he was facing you while still sitting on the seat. "Here, gimme that, espèce d'idiot." You blushed as he reached out his hands and expertly secured the strap, his hands lightly grazing the sensitive skin of your neck.
The contact made your spine go rigid as he turned away from you, smiling and patting the seat behind him. You lowered your eyebrows and half-glared and half-smiled in a jovial way as you sat down, your body slowly starting to move again. Mattie rarely touched anyone, though you were probably the one he was closest too. Seeing as you two had grown up together and all, hugging and such when you were little, no matter how much Matthew didn't want to. Even so, he rarely touched you. So, when he did, either on purpose or just by chance, it still was a bit of a shock. You just weren't used to it. You were off in La-la land when you realized that you weren't moving yet. "Um..... Mattie.... what are you waiting for?"
"Um...... (Name)..... you have to hold on..." Matthew half-jokingly half-nervously stated.
"To what?" You looked around you, there was nothing to hold on to except...
"To me, silly. You really don't get this do you?" Matthew laughed and the soft shhhk shhhk noise was made as both of your winter coats made contact and you sheepishly slipped your arms under his, clasping them against the lower part of his rib cage.
"Okay, I'm ready." You quickly snapped your visor down and put your hand back in place.
"Okay, (Name)! Hold on!" Matthew shouted above the sound of the engine roar.
You did. Oh man, you did! You tightened your grip on either hand to each other and dug your heels into the sides of the vehicle. Your eyes were shut tight and you dug your helmet-clad face into Matthew's back. After a while, the loud roar of the engine had sunk into your bones and the bumps and jumps had become more-or-less normal, you opened your eyes and slowly lifted your head. What you saw amazed you, Matthew had driven to an ATV path and was currently cruising through a wooded area. Everything that was close to the path whipped past while the trees that were deeper in moved by at a measured pace. It took your breath away. Snow clung to everything, like fluffy, white moss. The path before you and behind you glistened in the filtered sunlight. Slowly, you released your painful, iron grip on Mattie and the snowmobile, stretching your joints and forcing yourself to relax. You craned your neck upwards and saw the tops of trees whooshing past, their arm-like branches making the sky into a jigsaw puzzle. You took a deep breath in and released it, smiling to your self. The only way this could get better was if-
Your eyes snapped wide and you shrieked in delight. You had spotted, miraculously, a young deer and had whipped around your head and leaned towards it subconsciously, surprising Matthew and causing the vehicle to capsize, depositing you, face-first, in a snowbank and successfully scaring the poor animal away. You watched in disappointment as it skidded between the trees. Full of disappointment, you groaned and face-planted the snow. You were an official idiot.
"(Name)! Are you okay!" Matthew skidded towards you, and you felt pressure on your right shoulder as he rolled you over. "(Name)?"
"I'm fine." You groaned, squinting a bit as some snow made its way into your eyes. "Sorry."
"I'm okay. I just don't know why you spaced out back there...." His violet-blue eyes searched your body for cuts and bruises, concern clearly written on his face.
"I saw a deer..." You winced as you got up, your arm not too happy about your spill.
"A deer?" Matthew looked even more worried now. "At this time of the year?"
You nodded like a child, giving Matthew the signature I-know-you-don't-believe-me,-but-please-believe-me look.
He sighed. "Let's just get back on the trail, it's almost time to eat..." He turned his back to you as he sat down, checking to see if everything was fully-functional. He turned to look at you and smiled while patting the seat behind him and then reaching up to snap his visor into place.
You just stared at him for a bit, then smirked to yourself and hopped aboard. "Alright! Let's go! I can practically hear those pancakes calling my name!"
Mattie threw his head back and laughed as he revved the engine yet again and the automobile lurched and sped forward.
~Le Cold and Wintry Time Skip !!!~
You both arrived at Matties' house just as the sun dropped behind the snow-encrusted pines across the frozen lake that sat just fifty feet from the house itself. The view took your breath away. The night before, frosty wind had lifted and carried away all the snow off the ice to some far off place so the lake looked like a mirror and the ice was smoothly polished. The trees were a perfect deep, lush green and the pure, sparkling white snow was a wonderful contrast, all reflected on the ice of the lake. The sunset behind the tree tops bounced off a few stray clouds that hadn't yet blown away from the previously overcast weather. The array of golden yellows, vibrant oranges, and intricately deep reds shone ten-fold. You stepped over the padded seat as Matthew parked his prize snowmobile. You unfastened your helmet as the scene caught your attention. Your hand dropped to your side, bringing the helmet with it as your jaw slacked a bit.
Mattie turned off the engine and the entire forest around you became still and silent. Subconsciously you held your breath, frozen in place, not wanting it to change. Mattie padded behind you, the sound of crunching snow a beautiful symphony to the silence.
"It's beautiful, huh?" You could hear the smile on his face, not a sarcastic smile, but a genuine smile. You couldn't help but smile as well.
"It's amazing. I wish I had a view like this..." Your sentence drifted off, floating through the air.
Mattie nodded. "I know what you mean. C'mon, let's head inside..." He grabbed your hand and lightly tugged you away from the view just as the sun slipped behind the horizon. You sighed and let him pull you away through the snow and into the toasty house. Mattie let go briefly to turn on some lights and the electric fireplace so the house heated up even more, almost like walking around with a pair of arms encircling you. He whistled sharply and padding was heard, emerging from the master bedroom. Mattie turned towards the kitchen, getting out the ingredients and supplies for making pancakes as your face erupted into a wide grin and you dropped to your knees, arms extended.
"Kumajiro! Hello, sweet!" The small, furry creature made a sort of a polar bear equivalent to a mewl and galloped over to you and into your arms, his wet nose touching yours in a sweet Eskimo Kiss. You laughed and rolled on to your back and played with the soft ball of fur.
Matthew smiled as he cooked the pancakes. You really were adorable. His smile did not leave his face all the while he was cooking. A few minutes later he held two giant stacks of pancakes, both dressed with warm amber liquid. He placed them both on his coffee table along with tall glasses of milk and some forks and knives. "Bon appétit~!"
You smiled brightly at Matthew and set Kumajiro down, promising him that you wouldn't forget him, and crawled over to the low, oak table. You crossed your legs. Leaning up against Mattie's couch, you smiled brightly as Matthew laughed at your eager face and placed the food on the smooth surface. "Merci."
"Soyez le bienvenu~!" He smiled back as he took his seat and you both ate the delicious fluffy disks.
Silence fell over you two as Kuma rolled onto his back, looking at you with two glossy black marbles. You smiled at his attempt to seduce you to rubbing his belly. Giving in, you toyed with Kuma's soft underbelly fir, teasing him and getting him to swat at your hand with his paws. "Thanks for taking me riding today, Matt." You giggled as Kuma gnawed your hand, suckling it but not hurting as his sharp teeth grazed your palm.
"Yeah, sure. No problem, (Name). I wouldn't even think about anyone else to go with me." His eyes watched Kuma as the little bear got a little more excited and therefore rough.
You both were watching Kuma so thank Dieu Matt didn't see your eyes widen and cheeks obtain a dusty pink. "I..... I'm glad." Awkward silence. Even Kuma stopped moving, staring at your hand like it just cheated him out of pancakes. Your face exploded in colour. "N-no. That didn't come out right. I meant that I am happy you wouldn't bring anyone else here but m-....e." You mentally derailed, realizing that you were just making an idiot out of yourself. Your eyes squeezed shut, your heat leaping into your throat and your stomach felt like it was still on the snowmobile, going around and around and around and arou-
A soft giggle. "(Name). It's okay. I understand." Mattie interrupted you.
But did he? You forced out a laugh nonchalantly. "Of course."
"Yeah. Sometimes I wish it was just you, me, Kumahiro-"
"Yeah Kumajiro, and this cabin."
Was he saying what you thought he was syaing?
"I could stay here with you foreve-...-r" Mattie seemed to stop short, his own words coming back to him. You looked at him, worried. His eyes were now just as wide, if not more so, and his face turned the colour of the maple insignia on his sweater. "Y-you know...... Like, talking and..... stuff...." He left off lamely.
Now was your turn to giggle. It soon turned into a full laugh. You leaned back against the couch, gripping your midsection, you face intimidating the ever-popular "XD" face. It took a little bit but you recovered, opening your eyes to stare at the ceiling. The smile slowly slid off your face. "Stuff like what?" You turned your head to look at the still red Matthew, half joking and half hopeful.
"W-well I dunno....." He looked away, going back into his shell. "....What would you want it to be."
Yet again your face turned red. "U-um... Stuff like.... playing with Kuma and... making pancakes.... and.... hiking...."
"Oh.... yes... of course..." Wait. Was he... disappointed?
"Is there something you would want to do....?" Your head cocked.
"N...no!" He turned even more red.
You were easily getting frustrated with this, something like tennis between you two. Neither willing to accept the topic on your side of the court and hitting back to the other.
You grunted, giving voice to your feelings. "What will it take for you to just SAY IT? Gawd... Do I have to freaking PULL OUT YOUR TONGUE? Is it because we have been friends since forever? Am I friend-zoned? Is that why you cant just-!" It might sound cliche but you were honestly crying. It just hurt so much. The indescribable ache that racked through your chest had grown and manifested itself into just too much. As a sob got stuck in the back of your throat, halting your speech.
Matt's eyes widened. His hand unconsciously came up to your cheek, handling it as if it were porcelan. He rubbed circles in your soft cheek, wiping up tears and comforting you with his warm touch in contrast to the cold air outside. Slowly, as your hiccups started to subside, his palm came into contact with your cheek, gaining confidence he slid it to the back of your head, his other hand cradling the base of your neck. Both working together to pull you closer.
Your tears clouded and morphed your vision, so you just closed your eyes, forcing more tears to fall. But when you felt something warm and.... wet? Your eyes snapped open and unconsciously you tried to jerk your body away, but you soon found that you couldn't. Matt wouldn't let you. You stared wide-eyed at him as he licked up another tear. Then, after making brief eye contact, he kissed you, pushing the salty flavor of your tears into your mouth. At the feel of his mouth you melted. Literally. You felt like you melted into a puddle and your heart just kept falling into a bottomless pit.
All too soon, Matt pulled away, smiling in a sweet, apologetic manor. "Je t'aime."
You sniffed a little, the last few hiccups leaving your body. "Y-you see? Now was tha-at so hard?"
Immediately, the tension was broken as a smile infected Mattie's face and a small giggle fell out of his lips. He pulled you in for another, searing, body smelting kiss. "Yes, it was so hard." He nipped then kissed your nose.
"I love you too. .... But stop taking advice from Kuma.... licking isn't exactingly 'normal' ...at least until marriage at least."
Mattie smiled. "That's a good idea..."
You smiled back and looked out the window. "Oh! Look! The stars are out! C'mon!" You pulled Mattie to his feet and lead him outside.
You felt a warm something wrap around your waist as Mattie pulled you into yet another kiss. "We should do this again sometime."
"What? Snowmobiling, star-gazing, or kissing?" You teasingly smiled up at him.
"Hmm... All of the above~
And Kumajiro watched from the coffee table, eating ignored pancakes, as the two figures outside stared at the shining stars as well as into each others eyes.
